2020-10-22T16:00:47+00:00October 22nd, 2020|Video|

Story of a Golf Club: Formby Ladies Golf Club In our latest episode of our ‘Story of a Golf Club’ series, we are back on England’s Golf Coast to visit the lesser known of the two Formby courses, Formby Ladies. We wanted to spend time at Formby Ladies given its unique standing in the game. The only Ladies only golf club in the UK with its own 18 hole course (the nearest example would perhaps be the Himalaya’s putting course at St Andrews), the fact that it has only one set of tee’s and plays over a short [...]

2020-10-20T18:02:58+00:00October 20th, 2020|Behind the Scenes, Podcasts, Sam's favourites|

We’ve been looking forward to this for some time! Lou is a self confessed golf nut and data nerd, and through his work with Scott Fawcett and DECADE he has an immense level of understanding of the stats surrounding the professional and amateur game! This is a great insight into the numbers behind the game of golf, with some shocking stuff around how to better use stats in your own game as well as the fine margins that separate the worlds best from the rest of the professional golfers. We hope you enjoy, and maybe take a few [...]

Story of a Golf Club: The Berkshire

2020-10-08T17:00:10+00:00October 8th, 2020|Video|

In Episode 5 of our ‘Story of a Golf Club’ series, we return to the famous Surrey sand-belt to visit the youngest member of the great quartet of clubs in the area: The Berkshire. This heathland was once a dense forest which hosted the Royal hunting trips organised by Queen Anne in the 18th century, along with nearby Swinley Forest. After much of the timber was cleared in 1916 to support the British effort in the First World War, Herbert Fowler surveyed the 400-acre estate on horseback, and his two designs were finally brought to life in 1928. [...]

We recap a dramatic weekend of golf (and weather!) at the Scottish Open, where Aaron Rai emerged victorious at the Renaissance Club. The gang also dissects Sergio’s new method of putting with his eyes closed, and we hear about their own golfing exploits this past week: Bruce’s pondering of swing mechanics, Tom’s round at Woodhall Spa, and Cal’s bold strategy for winter ball striking…

2020-09-29T07:00:07+00:00September 29th, 2020|Golf Course Architecture, Podcasts|

We spent some time with Jasper Miners and Sam Cooper from Evalu18 who are doing some incredibly exciting work with their website helping to simplify golf course architecture and celebrate the rich history of golf courses up and down the UK, as well as bringing it to homes around the world with some truly stunning artwork. We had a great time chatting away about how courses are ever evolving, and how the current renaissance of GCA is shifting the focus on how we see & enjoy golf in the UK.

042 – Cleeve Hill: Story of a Golf Club – #savegolfonthehill

2020-09-28T18:46:00+00:00September 28th, 2020|Golf Course Architecture, Golf History, Podcasts|

To coincide with the launch of our latest ‘Story of a Golf Club’ YouTube film, we are joined by Golf Club Atlas contributor Sean Arble, and course architect Robin Hiseman who both share a special connection with Cleeve Hill. The course is planning to shut in March next year, as the council have deemed golf there as not being financially viable in today’s climate. This course is the epitome of golf in the Auk. Stunning, historic, fun and most of all accessible for golfers of all abilities and budgets! The story of Cleeve Hill is a sad one, but [...]

Story of a Golf Club: Cleeve Hill

2020-09-23T09:58:04+00:00September 23rd, 2020|Video|

#savegolfonthehill The next episode from our ‘Story of a Golf Club’ series is  sad one, but it’s a story we have to tell. Golf has been played on Cleeve Hill common from as early as 1891, and the course was originally laid down by Old Tom Morris, consisting of dramatic views and blind shots with huge elevation change, but sadly its days are numbered. The layout was symptomatic of the location of the hill; sitting on top of a Limestone escarpment in the Cotswolds, 5 miles north of Cheltenham, and the club owes much to the stone its [...]

041 – US Open Round-Up with Chris Trott AKA Trottie Golf

2020-09-23T09:47:49+00:00September 23rd, 2020|Podcasts, Tour Takes|

The boys are joined by Trottie (who after his first guest appearance couldn’t stay away) to talk through Bryson’s win at Winged Foot in what many see as a watershed moment for the game. Wherever you stand on the distance debate and the strategy Bryson has used this year, it’s certainly got people talking! We are also in middle of club champs season, and Trottie could resist telling us about his recent (nett) win at Goat Hill last week! Enjoy
