We go behind the scenes at Sunningdale Golf Club to see Gil Hanse’s restoration of the New Course, one of England’s great heathland courses, and the work to bring back the width and scale of Harry Colt’s original design.

Phase 1 of the project has been transformative. The centrepiece is the famous par-3 5th hole, where the fronting bunker has been restored to something much closer to Colt’s vision. Alongside it, large-scale tree removal has reopened long-lost heathland views and playing corridors, bunkers across the course have been rebuilt in classic Colt style, and a handful of other holes have seen significant changes.

Harry Colt was Sunningdale’s Secretary and the architect of the New Course, which opened in 1923. Over a century, trees and creeping growth narrowed its fairways and softened its hazards. Now Hanse Golf Course Design is reversing that, returning the New to the bold, expansive heathland golf Colt intended.
