Rank Outsiders

Preface A few weeks ago, I was plodding my way down the 12th hole at Blackwell admiring the renovation work to the green site as part of the winter programme when Richard Pennell (@pitchmarks on twitter) from Woking Golf Club called me out of the blue. My initial thought was that I was in trouble for something I had said, but after some premature apologies and general well wishes between us Richard quickly got into the reason for the call. He wanted to write more about golf… An art form within the game which is sadly in decline, he asked [...]

Sunningdale Heath

words by Tom On a crisp, sunny Tuesday in September, we were on our way home from a few crazy days in Surrey, where we we treated to some of the finest golf this country has to offer. It is no secret that the heathlands of Surrey house some of the most spectacular and prestigious golf courses in England, but perhaps what is a secret, are the courses that are too often overlooked on a trip to this Mecca of English golf. After 72 holes in the previous 60 hours, both of us were regretting the previous commitment to [...]

Kummel: Spirit of the Game

2021-09-27T13:40:41+00:00September 27th, 2021|Blog|

Words by Sam Of the many hallmarks of the quintessential British Golf Club - the musty smell in the locker room, tongue and groove panelling in the bar, hair combs drowning in blue barbicide next to a vintage bottle of talcum powder in the shower room - one small golfing tradition seems to be in decline.  Kummel, an aniseed and caraway infused liqueur has been loitering around our clubhouses, keeping golfers hydrated, stomachs-settled and their first-tee nerves at bay for over a century now, but there is a serious cloud hanging over the future of this famous spirit [...]

Ryder Cup: The Preview

2021-09-21T15:44:01+00:00September 21st, 2021|Blog|

It is upon us. A long-awaited (three years !!!) cup is finally here, and with it, comes a rundown of all the storylines and speculative predictions you need to know before sitting down to watch it.   Previewing an event as complex as the Ryder Cup isn't easy, but I'll do my best to break it down for the avid and casual viewer. In an attempt to do this, I'll start with the most straightforward aspects of the event, and the more involved parts I'll work up to for the nerdiest amongst you. The course   Whistling Straits, Kohler, WI. [...]

The Bucket List vs The Rankings: How do things stack up?

2021-07-05T13:30:04+00:00July 5th, 2021|Blog|

Here are a few of our own takeaways...   1. At the top, it's no surprise that Augusta National punches well above its Rank of Ranks position, coming in at No 3 on the Bucket List ranking. In fact, the "I've seen it on TV so I wanna go there" sentiment (credit: Eric from The Fliers Club) runs throughout the Bucket List ranking. Other notables include Kiawah Island, Seminole (both of which perhaps benefit from some recency bias?), Bethpage Black, Whistling Straits and Riviera.   2. Not all US Open courses faired so well, and whilst Pinehurst seems to have cultivated [...]

Harry Colt – Words by Frank Pont

Harry Colt - Words by Frank Pont Harry Colt and his various partners were prodigious in their design and redesign of golf courses during what can best be described as the "classic" era for golf course architects. Despite a torrid economy immediately after WW1, whilst his competitors saw a diminution of commissions in the UK, Colt and his partners remained very active. Additionally, their travels were more widespread. Having focused international activities on Canada and the US before the war, later years brought opportunities in Ireland, France, The Netherlands and Spain. By that time, Colt himself was [...]

Should Golf be more Disney?

2021-03-05T12:00:00+00:00March 5th, 2021|Blog, Newsletter|

Firstly - Why do we need another newsletter? Perhaps it’s true that golf has always had an image problem and in the year 2021 it’s tempting to think the game is at a crossroads. Over the last year we’ve heard animated debates about a range of topics, all of which seem to relate to the very spirit of the game: the distance the ball is travelling, classic courses becoming obsolete, prize funds, choices of sponsor, pace of play, flexible memberships, hoodies and dress codes… We’re firm believers that one of golf’s great strengths is that there is space [...]

Why do we need another newsletter?

Perhaps it’s true that golf has always had an image problem, as a sport long viewed as the preserve of stuffy and wealthy white men. Yet in 2021 it’s tempting to think the game is at a crossroads. Over the last few months we’ve heard animated debates about a range of topics, all of which seem to relate to the very spirit of the game: the distance the ball is travelling, classic courses becoming obsolete, prize funds, choices of sponsor, pace of play, flexible memberships, hoodies and dress codes... It’s well-known that the covid-19 pandemic resulted in a golfing [...]
