Tour Journal: Utrechtse Golf Club De Pan
A continued blog piece to coincide with our filming releases in The Netherlands... in partnership with - Day 2 - Utrechtse Golf Club: 'De Pan' Spirits were in the sky until approximately 5 km outside of Utrecht. The hour-long journey through the fairly anonymous Dutch motorway network had passed quite quickly, as we recounted the highlights of our day at Eindhoven, with Sam reminding the others in vivid detail how well he had played on the back nine to secure the win. Bruce was at the wheel when suddenly a light flashed up on the dashboard, warning that the tyre pressure had dramatically fallen. From the comfort of the backseat, Tom quickly dismissed this as a regular occurrence in modern vehicles and assured the others that the car was probably being overly sensitive. We decided to continue carefully to our accommodation in Utrecht just a few kilometres away. Parking [...]
Netherlands Series: Eindhovensche Golf
Kicking off with our film on Eindhovensche Golf, this was our first taste of golf in the Netherlands and, curiously, it’s the only club in The Netherlands without the word ‘club’ after its name. The history of Eindhovensche Golf is inseparably entwined with one of the great household names in electronics which was founded in the industrial city of Eindhoven in 1891: the Philips Company. One of the co-founders, Anton Philips, along with his wife, Anna, had the inspiration to develop recreational and leisure facilities to attract prospective employees to their headquarters. Harry Shapland Colt was engaged to design the course, which opened for play in 1930. The course at Eindhoven is a majestic heathland which weaves its way through an immense forest. One could easily fit two or three courses on this site but, to the credit of Eindhoven’s membership, Colt’s vision remains intact - indeed, [...]
Netherlands Tour Journal: Getting to Eindhoven
A continued blog piece to coincide with our filming releases in The Netherlands... in partnership with - Prelude - Rye Regular listeners of our podcast will know that a trip to the Netherlands to play golf has been a long term aspiration for the Cookie Jar Boys. In Sam’s case, it might be better described as a borderline unhealthy obsession, prompting more than the occasional outburst about how great it would be to see ‘The Old 9’ - the oldest clubs in the Netherlands, many of which were designed by the great H.S. Colt - soak in some Dutch culture, and enjoy a ‘shmoke and a pancake’ (said in his best Austin Powers’ Goldmember accent). So it was with a great sense of anticipation that our tour finally arrived. After the disastrous KLM debacle (of which more can be heard in the first episode of the Tour Diaries podcast on [...]
168 – Cees Collart – Sustainable Agronomy
Kicking off our first piece of content from our Netherlands Tour in October 2022 with Cees Collart, Chairman of Sustainable Golf at the R&A. Cees has spent much of his life around the game, spending time in England & Scotland as well as The Netherlands, now playing much of his golf at Eindhoven. Through some regular matches we have been friends with Cees for some time now, and getting to record a podcast with him about the work he is leading on sustainable agronomy was great fun. Really interesting stuff in here about turf types, turf management, and the running game, all speaking t the future of sustainable golf which will be in shades of yellows and browns rather than the saturated greens we have been used to seeing in recent decades. Who would have known you could have sustainable turf in the Middle East. Don't forget our [...]
